Project Description

Who Are You (please include a picture):
Earl Manley

Home Town: Cottonwood Heights, Utah, From Wash D.C.

Homebrew Club: Lauter Day Brewers

I’ve been a homebrewer since: fall 2000

Do you have a homebrewing disaster you’d like to share:Not having replaced a broken hydrometer,  I bottled an Imperial Stout too soon. The bottles were under the stairs, and in boxes. So there was no danger from the shrapnel.

What is your favorite style(s) to brew?  The one that I am brewing at the moment

What style(s) will you never brew? I have not rejected any style, but was limited by temperature control. Now, I have a conical fermentor in a freezer for temp control

What was the first beer you ever brewed?  How did it turn out? A Nut Brown Ale kit.   I did not do anything about the chlorine before brewing. It developed off flavors

Have you ever had a homebrew mistake that turned out great? Using hops from the freezer without reading the package, just my notes, I over bittered an Irish Red (Killians clone.)  After adding in any available extract, the brewe turned out to be a decent brown ale

What is your favorite beer recipe?
Double Mocha Porter  Mole Porter

Are you a BJCP Judge?  If so, what is your rank and how long have you been judging? No

Do you have a favorite homebrew trick or gadget that you’ve found to make your beer better/brewing easier, etc? All tricks and gadgets make beer easier… are there ever too many gadgets? A pump helps physically, more than any other tool

Describe your brew system. I have a 2 tier hand-built system, a combination gravity and pump powered transfers. HLT and kettle are converted sanke. I use a 54qt rectangular cooler for my mash/lauter tun, with a copper pipe sparge arm

How frequently do you brew (times/month or /year)? Usually not soon enough…you know that sickening sound of a blown keg, while the airlock is still bubbling away

What is your favorite malt?  Why? I look for organic grains first. I believe in it even if it taste the same (may be because it taste the same. Mostly American 2 row)

What is your favorite hop? Why I am just playing with a bunch of the new hops..I still love a ton of hops but do not crave the massively bitter hop bombs
Do you have a favorite or house yeast? What qualities do you like about that yeast? Imperial Organic.  I tried this yeast for the first time. I loved it. It started fast and finished where needed quickly, also.

How did you get into this hobby? I donate to KRCL 90.9 and receive a homebrew starter package as a premium

If you could serve your homebrew to someone famous, who would it be and what would you give her/him? Jimi Hendrix! My Mole Porter

What’s the most unusual ingredient you’ve ever used in a brew? Cayenne pepper

Do you have any pets or kids named after beer styles or ingredients? No

How many medals have you won from homebrew competitions? None

Do you brew alone, with friends or with someone you live with? Usually alone

Are you an indoor or outdoor brewer? Outdoor or undercover at the front of the garage.

List some of the names you’ve given your beers. Which is your favorite?

ELIPA, an IPA made for Eli; Air Pollution Porter; ELIPA Second Coming; Return of ELIPA; One Eye Guy Pale Ale (after eye surgery); Deep Web Pale ALe; BEE Vitamin Beer; Amped, my higher gravity version of Full Suspension. I am really happy with the Double Mocha Porter, one batch was brewed on a very bad air day, hence the name Air Pollution Porter
