Project Description

The Basics

Where are you from?
San Diego via the PNW

I’ve been a Lauter Day Brewers member for:
About three years

Do you have a homebrewing disaster you’d like to share?
I disconnected the liquid out on a full, pressurized, ball lock keg. Unbeknownst to me, the poppet was not properly seated. It slowly pushed out the contents of the keg, filling up the bottom of my keezer.

Do you have any pets or kids named after beer styles or ingredients?
Not yet!

Do you have a good Homebrew club story you’d like to share
Um….Club night at the Portland Hombrew Con…that’s all I have to say

If you could serve your homebrew to someone famous, who would it be and what would you give her/him?
Would be fun to see if Dave Matthews likes NEIPA’s

List some of the names you’ve given your beers. Which is your favorite?
I’ve never been that creative with naming beers – but my favorite was probably “Olly’s Fresh Hop Red.” Brewed to commentate the birth of my third boy, Oliver. Used a bunch of fresh picked Cascade from my back yard.

Have you won any homebrew competition medals? If yes, what place and for what beer(s)?
Not yet. Last year’s Beehive Brew Off was my first ever competition

Brewing Experience

How long have you been homebrewing?
15 years or so

What was the first beer you ever brewed and how did it turn out?
A partial mash Sierra Nevada clone – turned out “not to bad.”

What is/are your favorite style(s) to brew?
IPAs, Porter/Stout

What style(s) would you never brew?
Never say never!

Do you have a favorite homebrew trick or gadget that you’ve found to make your beer better/brewing easier, etc?
I’m constantly tweaking my system – can’t leave well enough alone! But, my favorite addition so far has probably been an EZboil controller for my electric brew panel. Oh, and my uni-tank

What’s the most unusual ingredient you’ve ever used in a brew?
Haven’t gone very experimental yet…

How I Brew

Describe Your Brew system
Three vessel electric RIMS. 15 gallon pots/keggle. 5 gallon batches

How frequently do you brew?
About once a month.

Are you an indoor or outdoor brewer?
Indoor.

Do you brew alone, with friends or with someone you live with?
Usually alone.

Do you have a favorite hop? If yes, what is it and why do you like it?
So many different hops for so many different styles. Hard to pick a favorite. Though, Citra’s not bad….

Do you have a favorite malt? If yes, what is it and why do you like it?
Just about finished off a sack of Maris Otter. Used it everything from NEIPA’s to stouts and porters. Adds a nice malt character and breadiness.

Do you have a favorite yeast? If yes, what is it and why do you like it?
Big fan of Wyeast 1318 London Ale III/Imperial A38 Juice. Very versatile

Anything else on your mind?
I’m constantly impressed by the skills and knowledge contained within the membership of LDB. From critiques to encouragement to education – always pushing me to be a better brewer!
